Marketing with Moxie

Excerpt from my blog, www.marketingwithmoxie.com. Click here to go there.

Mox·ie (mŏk'sē) noun Slang

1. The ability to face difficulty with spirit and courage.
2. Aggressive energy; initiative.
3. Skill; know-how.

Origin:

1925–30, Americanismafter Moxie, a trademark (name of a soft drink)

Hardly anyone knows that the term "moxie" derived from a bottle of soda popular in the early 1900's. Moxie was one of the first mass marketed soft drinks. The Moxie Man on the bottle implores you to "Drink Moxie" because it is distinctively different. Too different, it seems. It gave way to Coke, mostly because of a bitter aftertaste that one soft drink writer said tastes like licorice mixed with pomade. It took a lot of moxie to drink Moxie.

Moxie Soda is still around. It's a boutique soda bottled in Maine and is the state's official soft drink. But for most of us, the term moxie communicates American ingenuity, skill and know-how.  So that's what this blog will be about. Moxie. Marketing with Moxie. In honor of my Dad and that generation of post World War II small business owners that made America great. They overcame obstacles, opened hardware stores, built factories, raised families and became the backbone of the American economy.

This blog will feature stories about businesses and business owners in and Around Austin, Texas who possess an "inner moxie" when it comes to marketing.  I'll also discuss tips, tools and tactics that any small business owner anywhere can use.

Now, more than ever, we could all use a little moxie.  Think I'll order a case right now and have it shipped to Austin.  Care to join me?
